Angels Landing Trail The trail to Angels
Landing is one of the most exhilarating in the park. It is a
somewhat strenuous 5 mile round trip hike that can be done in a half day
if you are in decent physical shape. The trail ascends 1488 feet
from the canyon floor. There are many switchbacks on the
trail. |

One set of switchbacks is named Walter's Wiggle (after the park's first superintendent). The well-known quote about these famous switchbacks it that "it is the only place in North America where you can see the front and back of a horse at the same time". Towards the top of the trail many people get scared and turn back. You must maneuver your body along a thin razor-back of rock where the cliffs drop off over a thousand feet below, sometimes on both sides (see picture of hiker on this section of the trail in photo to the left). Views from the summit are breath-taking. There are panoramic views of the Great White Throne and the canyon floor with its the winding Virgin River. |
