From the parking area hikers trek
north through the forest and past a small pond. You'll see 10,850 foot
Mt. Hoffmann to the northwest as you begin the hike. May Lake lies in
the foot of this peak. Mt Hoffmann is considered the geographic
center of Yosemite National Park. |

Shortly after beginning the hike
the trail crosses some granite mounds and begins to ascend more steeply.
Past the granite the trail's switchbacks begin. When you reach the
top of the ascent the trail splits. The left trail leads to the
lakeshore and a campground for backpackers. Follow this trail to walk
around the lake. The right fork leads to the May
Lake High Sierra Camp.
