Hetch Hetchy Reservoir and O'Shaughnessy Dam are the main source of water and a source of electrical power for the city of San Francisco (photo below), over 150 miles away.  A network of aqueducts and tunnels carry the water into the city.  Work on Hetch Hetchy began in earnest in 1914, eight years after the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906.

The photo above, taken in the early 1900s before the O'Shaughnessy Dam was constructed, shows the Hetch Hetchy Valley and the Tuolumne River, looking East.
