In 1858 Hale Tharp was shown Moro Rock by Indians. He was the first white
man to see Moro Rock. Three years later, along with his two
stepsons, he was the first to climb it. |

In 1931 the
stone steps that are still in use today were built by the National Park
Service. Because of the sensitive design of the stairway, and the
craftmanship present in in construction, the stone steps were added to the
National Registry of Historic Places in 1978.
