The enactment of prohibition in Colorado In 1916 forced Denver saloonkeeper John Holzwarth Sr. to start over as a subsistence rancher. His new homestead, 8 north of Grand Lake, was established in 1917. The ranch never came about. With the completion in 1920 of the Fall River Road over the Continental Divide, John joined other valley residents in serving an increasing numbers of mountain travelers. As a result, he started Holzwarth's Trout Lodge. The Trout Lodge lasted for 10 years before the ranch was converted to a dude ranch. The dude ranch lasted for about 40 years. In 1973 John Holzwarth Jr sold the ranch and all the modern buildings were removed. The ranch was restored to it 1920 status. |
