Immediately after capturing the fort, Union Major General David Hunter, an passionate abolitionists, ordered the release of area slaves. Many freed slaves were recruited into the Union army. They became know as the First South Carolina Colored Regiment. Fort Pulaski was also a final destination on the Underground Railroad. Before the abolition of slavery in the United States, the Underground Railroad was a secret cooperative network run by local groups of northern . The abolitionists were both white and free blacks. They helped fugitive slaves reach safe haven in the free states or in Canada |
