Here at Ninety Six National Historic Site settlers of old struggled against the harsh backcountry to survive and Cherokee Indians hunted and fought to keep their land. Two towns and a trading post were formed and abandoned to the elements, and two Revolutionary War battles that claimed over 100 lives took place here. |

The Star Fort was a regular earthen fort laid out in the shape of an eight pointed Star. One point was replaced by a communication trench. A communication trench connected the fort with the town stockade. There was a deep trench for added protection around the fort. The fort was build to protect the eastern flank of the town of Ninety Six and to control the approach along Island Ford Road as it neared the town. |
