Piercing through the talus (rock rubble) are dome-shaped projections called spines. The spines formed when lava broke through the volcano's outer surface and pushed upward. The talus formed later. Over time the constant tug of gravity, in concert with freezing and thawing, caused rock to break away from the cliffs above, creating a sloping blanket of rock. The dome-shaped rock that holds Vulcan's Eye (below) resembles what Lassen Peak, a plug dome volcano, once looked like. |
