The Bureau of
Prisons closed Alcatraz in 1963. It was too expensive to maintain.
Buildings were crumbling due to salt water that was used in the making of
the concrete. Supplies, fuel, and fresh water had to be barged to
the island. The prison’s unusual location encouraged a circus-like
atmosphere. Books full of crazy stories were being publicized in
books and movies, tour boats circled the island everyday. A new
prison in Illinois replaced Alcatraz. |
