The US penitentiary on Alcatraz opened in 1934. The Federal Bureau of Prisons opened the facility to lock up a small number of inmates who were so dangerous,  violent, and prone to escaping that they could not be managed safely in other prisons.  Alcatraz seldom housed more than three hundred prisoners at any given time.
