The Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse, first activated on June 15, 1962, was the last major lighthouse built by the federal government. Some say it looks more like an air traffic control tower than a lighthouse. |

|
The tower's distinctive triangular shape, with one point aimed towards the ocean, allows it to endure winds of up to 125 miles per hour. Inside the tower there is an elevator that provides a 74-second trip towards the top. After the elevator ride, it is still necessary to scale a 25-foot ladder to the light room. |

On May 29, 2008, the Charleston Lighthouse was also transferred from the Coast Guard to the National Park Service and is now a part of Fort Sumter National Monument. The reason for this was to the the historic structure and surrounding property would then be protected from commercial development. The Coast Guard will continue to maintain the light, but the National Park Service will be in charge of tower preservation. The lighthouse is not open to park visitors.
