In the center of the Florissant Valley, in Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, stands the Hornbek homestead compound. It was the home of Adeline Hornbek, a strong, determined woman who came to the area with her four children in the 1870s. She claimed the land under the Homestead Act and defied traditional gender roles to become the owner of a prosperous ranch. The Hornbek Homestead was the first homestead in the Florissant Valley. The 1876 homestead has been restored and is the site for living history programs. |
