800 acre
Devils Postpile National Monument was established in 1911. The
Devils Postpile formation is a unusual display in geology. It is one
of the world’s finest examples of columnar
basalt. The columns rise
60 feet high and are unusually symmetrical.

There is another wonder just
downstream from the Devils Postpile at Rainbow Falls. The National
Park website calls it “A gem unique and worthy of its name.” The San
Joaquin River plummets 101 feet into a cool swimming hole below. When
the sun is overhead, a bright rainbow highlights the spectacular falls.

The park is accessible to most
visitors only during the summer and early fall. A shuttle bus is
used to transport guests to the park. Click
