Borax, "White Gold of the
Desert" The search for gold and other metals in Death Valley created few fortunes. Borax, the "White Gold of the Desert," was the valley's most profitable mineral. Harmony Borax Works was one of Death Valley's first borax operations. It operated from 1883-1888. A 3/8-mile interpretive trail takes you through Harmony Borax Works. |

The sign to the right in the photo above reads, "Old Dinah, 1894. Steam tractor and ore wagons introduced at old Borate to replace the twenty mule teams and replaced in turn by the Borate and Daggett Railroad. The tractor was later used and abandoned on the Beatty-Deane Wonder Mine Road in Death Valley." |
