Cedar Breaks National Monument
Utah

A magnificent natural amphitheater has been eroded out of the multi-hued Pink Cliffs east of Cedar City, Utah.  Many years of sedimentation, uplift and erosion have created a deep canyon of brightly colored rock walls, fins, spires and columns.  The rocks in the amphitheater contain iron and manganese in various combinations which provide the brilliant colors.  Iron oxides provide the reds, oranges, and yellows, while manganese oxides provide shades of purple.  The Indians called it the "Circle of Painted Cliffs".  

Cedar Breaks National Monument covers and area of about 3 miles and is over 2,000 feet deep. The rim of the canyon is over 10,000 feet above sea level.  The rim is forested with clusters of Aspen, Engelmann Spruce,  and Subalpine Fir interspersed with beautiful meadows of grass and summertime wild flowers.
