Natural Entrance

Visitor to Carlsbad Caverns may enter by way of two self-guided routes, the Big Room Route and the Natural Entrance Route.  The Big Room Route is the easiest.  754 feet deep elevators wisk visitors directly to the Big Room. The Natural Entrance Route requires about 1 mile of steep downhill walking through the cave via the natural entrance.  This route allows the visitor to see additional cave rooms and formations.  All of the 500,000 visitors that see the cave each year must exit via the elevators.  Tickets are sold at the visitor center each day, except December 25.  Entrance fee tickets are good for three days but do not include guided or other special tours. Summer hours are in effect from Memorial Day through Labor Day.  Click here for more NPS information on cave tours.
