Cathedral  Valley

Cathedral Valley

The valley is filled with large Entrada sandstone monoliths that resemble cathedrals.

Southern Desert, view from high on the northern plateau.

A 59 mile long loop road meanders through Cathedral Valley. It can be accessed from UT-24 just east of the park boundary. The fording of the Fremont River, which is seldom more than a few feet deep, is usually required. However, if you don't want to ford the river, you can take the eastern part of the loop road near Cainville and back track when you are done sightseeing.

These photographs are of the northern area of Cathedral Valley.  When I was there in the month of July I never saw another vehicle or person for the five hours I was in the area.  The dirt roads are regularly maintained, but after a storm it may take quite sometime before the roads become passable to many vehicles.  This is due to many (12 - 15) washouts from numerous flashfloods that occur during the storms.  Of course, the roads are impassable to virtually all vehicles, including 4X4's, during storms because they become extremely slick and it becomes impossible to control your vehicle.
